Scottish Housing Exposition: Zero Carbon Housing
Stage 2 Architectural Technology
Lecturers
Jonathan Scott
Tahar Kouider

This project focuses on modern (new) housing in the form of a Housing Exposition similar to those taking place across Europe. The project involved four ‘zones’ in which the students were split into four large groups. The different groups investigated and analysed four topical areas in housing construction, namely; Innovative Materials; Passive Solar Design; Zero Carbon Housing, and; Prefabrication.

In this group the students investigated and developed housing with that adopted the principle of Zero Carbon Housing. Zero Carbon is a complex and topical issue for current new housing, and can utilise a cradle to cradle approach. It does adopt a ‘fabric first approach’ similar to passive solar design but more readily allows the control of the interior environment through the use of renewable energy for heating, lighting, appliances and ventilation.
