Scottish Housing Exposition: Passive Solar Design
Stage 2 Architectural Technology
Lecturers
Jonathan Scott
Tahar Kouider

This project focuses on modern (new) housing in the form of a Housing Exposition similar to those taking place across Europe. The project involved four ‘zones’ in which the students were split into four large groups. The different groups investigated and analysed four topical areas in housing construction, namely; Innovative Materials; Passive Solar Design; Zero Carbon Housing, and; Prefabrication.

In this group the students investigated and developed housing with that utilised passive solar design and/or the German developed ‘Passivhaus’. The students looked to holistically develop housing that benefitted from ‘free’ heat from the sun in combination with a fabric first approach – which resulted in thermal values for the envelope that were much lower than regulation standards.
